                                In 1950`s the state of Patiala which was a part of PEPSU faced an acute shortage of qualified Medical staff despite there  being a reservation of seats for the PEPSU students in the King George Medical College, Lahore. Seeing this Dr. Amarjit Singh who was the personal physician to both  Late  Maharaja Yadvinder Singh, under whose patronage was the state of Patiala, and his chief administrator and advisor Mr. P.S. Rau I.C.S. , suggested and persuaded them to establish a Medical college at Patiala to fill the void. And So a prestigious institution that was to produce large number of well qualified and responsible medical personnel to serve the ailing community was started which now is popularly known as GOMCO.

The college building foundation stone was laid down by the then president of India Dr. Rajindra Prasad on 21st Dec, 1953 and the opening ceremony of the college building was performed by the then Union Health minister Rajkumari Amrit kaur on 4th Feb, 1955. 

The pioneering team of workers distinguished with the credit of being associated with the raising of this college comprises of Dr. Amarjit Singh, Dr. Jagdish Singh, Dr. Sahib Singh Bassi, Dr. Gurdial Singh, Dr. Ram Singh, Dr. Ramji Dass , Dr. Malik, Dr. Gurdev Singh, Dr. Bhim Singh, Dr. Amarnath Malhotra.

Col. P.C.Dutta was the first college principal ( 2/11/ 1953 – 23/10/1955 ). Dr. Amarjit Singh was the Second Principal of the College ( 24/10/1955 – 12/4/1967). Other doctors associated with the early development of our college are Dr. Prem Chandra, Dr.(Mrs.) Prem Chandra , Dr. Sohan Singh Hayre, Dr. M.S. Grewal , Dr. Sohanlal Sharma, Dr. Satwant Ganda Singh, Dr. I.D. Singh , Dr. S.D.Khanna , Dr. R.C. Khanna , Dr. S.S. Jolly, Dr. Chandraprakash , Dr. P.L. Wahi , Dr. I.S.Gill , Dr.R.L.Manchanda, Dr.N.D.Aggarwal and Dr.Puri.

The annual admission of this college was enhanced from 50 students to 80 students in 1956,  to 100 in1961 and to 150 in 1963. Post Graduate Courses were started in this college in 1959 – 60 . This college was affiliated to Punjab University earlier then in 1963 to Punjabi University and to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences since 1999 till date. 

Till date this college has admitted 6548 students ( 2054 Women and 4494 Men ) and produced to date 5955 Doctors and the remaining are still presently on the rolls. This college has also produced  2254 P.G.`s in various specialties till date.

A Dental College wing was added to this college in 1956 and remained attached till 1990. 

Chest and T.B. Hospital whose pioneer was Dr. Kushdeva Singh is part & parcel of this institute. 

Rajindra Hospital has been named after Maharaja Rajinder Singh (1876 – 1900).The Foundation Stone was laid down by Maharaja Yadwindra Singh on 15/4/1950 and it was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Late Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. on 12th Feb, 1954. It started as a 500 bedded hospital and presently it has 1196 beds.
